Italy Debuts First Battery-Electric Train For Cleaner Narrow-Gauge Rail

Italy has officially marked a major milestone in sustainable transportation with the approval of its very first battery-electric narrow-gauge train for passenger service. Manufactured by Stadler, this cutting-edge rail technology promises to transform regional transit by significantly cutting carbon emissions on isolated networks.

For decades, travelers exploring various regions and attractions across the country have relied on traditional diesel locomotives for scenic routes. This new rollout signals a definitive shift toward eco-friendly innovation, paving the way for cleaner journeys across unique Italian landscapes.

The Dawn of Clean Rail Technology

Italy’s rail safety regulator, ANSFISA, granted official authorization for the SRBe 312 trainset to enter active passenger service. This pioneering vehicle is cleared to operate on the isolated 950 mm gauge network managed by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane.

Initially, these battery-powered multiple units will primarily service the 27.4-kilometer route connecting Altamura and Matera. This historic deployment represents the first project of its kind involving narrow-gauge battery trains anywhere in the nation.

Infrastructure and Regional Impact

The ambitious rollout is actively supported and backed by the European Union’s comprehensive National Recovery and Resilience Plan. As part of this green initiative, specialized fast-charging infrastructure is currently being constructed at both terminal stations.

Ferrovie Appulo Lucane originally placed an order for seven of these innovative trainsets between 2023 and 2024. Operating this advanced fleet is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an impressive 1,300 tonnes annually.

Passenger Experience and Specifications

Beyond its environmental benefits, the new fleet offers modern comfort and efficient structural design for daily commuters and tourists alike. Each two-car trainset spans 36.5 meters in length and measures 2,500 millimeters in width.

The interior boasts a total capacity of 164 passengers, which includes 87 comfortable seated accommodations. While discovering Italy’s rich culture and local history, modern transit upgrades like this ensure a seamless journey.
