Multiple Drones and Explosions Hit Gaza Aid Flotilla, Activists Say

This blog post summarizes recent reports from organisers of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla who say several of their vessels were attacked near Greece.

As a travel writer with decades of experience around the Mediterranean, I’ll explain what the flotilla claims happened, why this matters for maritime safety, and how coastal communities — including those along Italy’s Riviera — may be affected or respond.

What organisers say happened near Crete

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) has reported that several boats in its convoy were targeted by drones, with explosions, dropped objects and electronic interference.

These are claims made by the flotilla and supporters; independent verification remains limited and some local authorities have disputed parts of the account.

The flotilla’s account: drones, jamming and explosions

GSF representatives said unidentified objects were dropped from overhead drones, communications were jammed, and loud music was broadcast over radio channels to disrupt coordination.

German human rights activist Yasemin Acar said five vessels were attacked and that activists counted around 15 to 16 drones above the convoy.

Videos circulated by the flotilla showed blasts, including footage claimed to be from the vessel Spectre.

Brazilian activist Thiago Avila reported hearing another explosion while recording.

Earlier in the month the group reported similar incidents while docked in Tunisia, although Tunisian officials dismissed at least one claim as unfounded.

Context: who is on board and where the mission began

The flotilla departed Barcelona in late August with the stated goal of challenging what organisers call the “illegal siege of Gaza.”

It now numbers around 51 vessels, most near the Greek island of Crete.

Among passengers is Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who has joined the mission in solidarity with Palestinians.

Israel has publicly stated it will not allow the flotilla to reach Gaza and has previously intercepted or blocked similar attempts in June and July.

What this means for Mediterranean maritime safety

Any reported use of drones, jamming equipment or explosive devices near civilian vessels raises concerns for safety, navigation and the rights of ships in international waters.

For travellers and those who operate small craft along busy coastal regions, these incidents underline the importance of following official advisories and maintaining up-to-date communications and safety gear.

  • Check Notices to Mariners and local coastguard updates before sailing.
  • Keep emergency communications and GPS backups ready.
  • Avoid areas where non-civilian activity or reported incidents are ongoing.
  • Why coastal regions like the Italian Riviera should pay attention

While the flotilla incident occurred near Greece, the Mediterranean is an interconnected sea.

Political actions, protest flotillas or security incidents can have ripple effects — from increased naval patrols to heightened media attention in port cities.
